Lawn mowers

What to Consider Before Buying a Lawn Mower?

Before you rush into ordering, grab a measuring tape, walk around your property, and clarify the technical parameters. Choosing the right garden lawn mower starts with a proper analysis of your garden.

Before purchasing, answer a few basic questions:

• How large is your lawn? For small areas up to about 300 m², smaller models are sufficient, while for large properties over 1000 m², you will need a machine with a wide cutting width and powerful drive.
• What is your access to a power source? Do you have outdoor outlets everywhere, or would you prefer the freedom of cordless operation?
• Is the terrain flat, hilly, or full of obstacles? Mowing slopes without a self-propelled mower is hard work. Around flower beds and trees, you will appreciate the excellent maneuverability offered by small lawn mowers.
• How much time do you want to spend on maintenance? Do you want to mow every Saturday, or would you prefer to leave the work to modern equipment and relax on a lounge chair?
• What will you do with the cut grass? Do you need a large collection bag, prefer side discharge, or want to nourish the lawn via mulching?

Note: Before buying, also check storage options. A high-performance garden mower can cut a large lawn quickly, but it takes up considerable space in a shed or garage. Look for models with foldable handles that are easy to store in smaller spaces.

Why Focus on Quality Machines

Lawns grow quickly, and during the season, you may need to cut them up to thirty times. Ordinary or low-quality mowers can wear out quickly, blunt blades, and cause the grass to yellow and weaken. Top lawn mowers feature precisely sharpened blades made of durable steel that cleanly cut the blades without shredding them. Investing in a reliable machine means a healthier lawn, lower energy consumption, and long-lasting performance without constant maintenance visits.

How to Choose a Lawn Mower and Which Is the Best?

There is no universal answer to which is the best lawn mower. For each user and garden, it will be a different model. When deciding which lawn mower to choose, the type of drive plays a crucial role. Each solution has its specifics that affect work comfort.

Difference Between Corded and Battery-Powered Mowers

Do you want a battery-powered model or one with a cord? Both types have their place on the market but are suited for completely different situations.

• Electric lawn mowers are noted for their lower purchase price, very low weight, and consistent power, as they are continuously powered from the grid. You don’t need to worry about fuel or recharging. The main drawback is handling the extension cable. You must ensure you don’t run over it with the blade, and maneuvering around bushes or trees requires patience.
• Battery-powered lawn mowers combine the best of both worlds. They offer quiet and eco-friendly operation of an electric motor while providing full freedom of movement like gasoline machines. No cable limits you. Drawbacks include higher initial cost (due to batteries) and limited runtime per charge. For larger areas, a second backup battery is recommended.
• Robotic mowers represent the pinnacle of convenience. Their main advantage is that they work completely autonomously, save your time, and maintain the lawn in perfect condition through regular mulching of small blades. They are extremely quiet and smart. Drawbacks include higher upfront cost and the need to install boundary wires initially (for models that require them), as well as more complex setup for intricate gardens with narrow paths.

Mower Type

Decide whether you need a classic rotary mower, a fully autonomous robotic mower, or a powerful string trimmer / battery-powered string trimmer for finishing touches around fences and edges.

Cutting Width

Determines how wide a strip of grass the mower cuts in a single pass. Small areas need about 32 cm, while large gardens require 45 cm or more.

Grass Collection Bag Capacity

The larger the bag, the less frequently you need to stop to empty it. For medium-sized gardens, a capacity of around 40–50 liters is optimal.

Height Adjustment and Mounting

Look for models with central height adjustment, allowing you to change the cutting height for all wheels simultaneously with a single lever.

Chassis Material

Budget mowers use lightweight, durable plastic, while premium machines feature solid steel or aluminum chassis that can withstand impacts from flying stones.

Choosing a Lawn Mower Based on Garden Size

Which Mower for a Small Garden?

Have a smaller garden up to 300 m²? A compact lawn mower is sufficient. You can choose between battery-powered or electric mowers depending on your preferences.

Which Mower for a Medium-Sized Garden?

For properties between 300–800 m², we recommend more powerful mowers with a larger cutting width. Here, you can also choose between battery-powered or electric models depending on your needs.

Which Mower for a Large Garden?

For large properties, forget small machines with narrow cutting widths. Look for models with a cutting width from 46 cm or more and a powerful engine. A key feature here is self-propulsion – the mower moves forward by itself, and you only guide it, saving a tremendous amount of effort.

SANITINO Tip: A great alternative for large areas are robotic models, which work continuously and maintain a stable lawn height effortlessly.

Which Is the Best Lawn Mower?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best lawn mower is the one that fits your needs:

• for convenience – robotic mowers
• for smaller gardens – electric or battery-powered models
• for power – high-performance lawn mowers

Modern Technologies and Product Features

Today's garden equipment offers features our grandparents could only dream of. Manufacturers focus on maximum ergonomics and comfort. You will find adjustable handles with soft grips that reduce vibrations transmitted to your hands. A major hit is the brushless motors in battery models – they offer longer life, higher efficiency, and much lower energy consumption.

Another useful feature is the bag-full indicator, which lets you know exactly when to stop without clogging the discharge chute.

Practical Tips for Proper Lawn Mowing

How Often Should You Mow the Lawn?

Mowing frequency depends on the season and growth rate. In spring, when grass is full of moisture and strength, mow once or twice a week. In dry summer, extend the interval to once every 10 to 14 days. The golden rule is to cut no more than one-third of the current grass height. Cutting more aggressively shocks the grass, causing it to dry and become more susceptible to disease.

SANITINO Tip: For more information on proper timing, see our article When and How to Mow Your Lawn.

Why Not Mow Wet Grass?

After rain or morning dew, keep your mower in the garage. Wet grass bends under the weight of water, so the blade cannot cut evenly, resulting in a shredded, uneven finish. Wet grass also sticks, clogging the mower’s chassis and discharge chute, and heavy wet clippings overload the motor. Additionally, electric models pose a safety risk on wet surfaces, and heavy mowers can leave deep ruts that damage lawn structure.

Recommendation: During hot summer months, avoid cutting the lawn too short. Taller grass shades the soil from direct sun and helps retain moisture at the roots.
