How to choose the right gardening or utility knife?

Purpose

When choosing the right knife, first consider what you actually need the knife for. Are you looking for a multifunctional pocket knife for various projects? Do you plan to carve wooden figures with a large folding knife? Do you need a high-quality gardening knife for grafting, cutting plants and branches, or maintaining greenery? Are you heading into the forest and need a large folding hunting knife, or would you prefer a small pocket knife?

Construction

In terms of construction, we offer two types of utility knives—folding knives and fixed-blade knives. Fixed-blade knives are very durable, but their disadvantage is that they are not as compact as folding knives. A folding knife can be used for virtually any project. It is not as robust as a fixed-blade knife, but it is much more compact—especially if you choose a pocket knife that weighs only a few grams. 

Safety first!

For safety reasons, folding knives are equipped with a locking mechanism that prevents accidental opening. You can carry them in your pocket, a sheath, or a case without worrying about safety. 

Handle material

The handle is the part of the knife you hold, and it affects how comfortably the utility knife feels during cutting. Designer utility knives are often made with wooden handles. However, wood requires regular maintenance, which is why most manufacturers of hobby knives prefer synthetic materials. Thanks to these materials, a tradesman’s knife is durable, strong, and comfortable to hold—especially if you choose an ergonomic handle. 

Knives with rubberized handles are also popular, as they fit perfectly in the hand even during demanding projects. 

Blade material

With hobby knives, it is also important to consider the blade material itself. The blade material affects how long the knife will last. Most manufacturers use high-quality stainless steel, which is resistant to rust and allows for occasional rough handling. It is also easy to sharpen. Much more durable is carbon steel, which is stronger and dulls less easily, but is harder to sharpen. Utility knives made from carbon steel are mainly used for working with wood, especially in gardening knives or large folding knives. 

Serrated or straight edge?

Utility, hunting, tradesman’s, and gardening knives with a straight edge are very versatile for cutting almost anything. You can’t go wrong by adding a straight-edge knife to your workshop equipment—even small pocket knives usually have a straight edge. However, if you need to cut fibrous materials, it is better to choose a utility knife with a serrated blade. A hunting or hobby knife with a serrated blade cuts rope, textiles, bread, or even tomatoes more easily. Popular are also DeWalt knives that combine straight and serrated edges. Another option is, once again, a multifunctional knife that includes several small blades.
