How to choose a washbasin?

When choosing a washbasin, consider the available bathroom space, installation method and design: Installation method – choose between a wall-hung washbasin, countertop washbasin, furniture washbasin or built-in model. Size and shape – for small toilets, choose compact hand washbasins; for family bathrooms, choose standard washbasins (60–80 cm wide) or double washbasins. Number of tap holes – check whether the washbasin has a hole for a deck-mounted tap or whether you will install a concealed or wall-mounted tap.

What material is a washbasin made of?

The most common material is sanitary ceramic , which is durable, has a smooth glazed surface and is easy to maintain. Another popular material is cast marble (conglomerate) or other materials such as glass , stoneware or enamelled steel.

What height should a washbasin be installed at?

The standard height of the top edge of a washbasin is 85 cm from the finished floor . For countertop washbasins , the total height of 85 cm also includes the height of the washbasin itself (the countertop underneath is therefore installed lower, typically at a height of approx. 70–75 cm). For taller users (over 185 cm), the installation height can be adjusted up to 90 cm.

How to install a washbasin?

Measure a height of 85 cm and mark the spacing of the fixing screws on the wall. Drill the holes, insert the wall plugs and screw in the combination fixing bolts. Place the washbasin onto the screws, fit the plastic washers and tighten the nuts firmly. Install the washbasin waste and the tap with flexible hoses. Connect the trap to the waste outlet and to the drain pipe in the wall. Seal the rear gap between the washbasin and the tiles with sanitary silicone.

How to choose a trap for a washbasin?

A classic plastic trap is the most affordable option and is suitable for places where the trap is hidden inside a bathroom cabinet. A designer metal trap (e.g. in brass, chrome or black finish) offers an aesthetic solution for exposed installations (for wall-hung washbasins without a cabinet). A space-saving furniture washbasin trap is specially shaped to run close to the wall and does not interfere with the space of the cabinet's top drawer.

What size washbasin should I choose?

Choose the size according to the available space and purpose of the room: Width 35–50 cm ( hand washbasins ) – suitable for separate toilets or small apartment bathrooms. Width 55–65 cm (standard washbasins) – the most common size for comfortable daily hygiene in a standard bathroom. Width 80–120 cm and double washbasins – suitable for spacious family bathrooms or comfortable use by several people at the same time.

What is the difference between a furniture washbasin and a classic washbasin?

A classic wall-hung washbasin has a finished and glazed underside as well as exterior surfaces. It can be mounted independently on the wall (optionally complemented with a ceramic pedestal or semi-pedestal). A furniture washbasin is shaped to fit precisely onto the top edge of a bathroom cabinet. The underside is usually unglazed and adapted for installation into furniture.

Does every furniture washbasin fit every cabinet?

No, it does not. Furniture washbasins have different shapes of the lower edge, corner radiuses and depths. We always recommend choosing a washbasin and cabinet from the same product series of one manufacturer, or purchasing a complete washbasin and cabinet set .

What does a washbasin with overflow mean?

The overflow is a safety opening in the upper part of the inner edge of the washbasin. If you forget to turn off the tap and the drain is closed, excess water flows through a channel inside the ceramic directly into the waste pipe, helping to prevent the bathroom from flooding.

Which waste do I need for a washbasin with or without overflow?

For a washbasin with overflow you need a closable washbasin waste (Click-Clack plug) with an overflow opening. For a washbasin without overflow , you must use a waste without an overflow opening (or a non-closable grid waste), so that when the washbasin is filled, water does not escape through the waste into the area underneath the washbasin.
