How to choose a bath mixer tap?

When choosing, consider the installation type, control method and bathtub location: Installation – choose between a wall-mounted, concealed, bath-mounted mixer tap installed on the bathtub rim or a floor-standing mixer tap. Control – available options include lever taps, traditional two-handle taps or thermostatic mixer taps that maintain a constant water temperature. Functions – consider whether you need a diverter between bath filling and a hand shower, or whether you also plan to install a shower column.

Where should a bath mixer tap be installed?

The location depends on the type of bathtub and the bathroom layout: Classic bathtub against the wall – a wall-mounted or concealed mixer tap is installed on the wall above the bathtub (usually approximately one third to one half of the bathtub length). Bathtub with a wider rim – the mixer tap is installed directly on the bathtub rim or on a raised wall structure. Freestanding bathtub – a freestanding floor-mounted mixer tap is installed separately next to the bathtub.

What types of bath mixer taps are available?

Wall-mounted mixer taps – are installed directly onto the wall-mounted water connections, while the entire tap body remains visible. Concealed mixer taps – the technical body is hidden inside the wall, leaving only the cover plate with controls and outlet visible. Bathtub rim mixer taps (multi-hole) – three- to five-hole sets installed directly into the bathtub rim. Freestanding (floor-mounted) – the mixer tap is fixed to the floor next to a freestanding bathtub.

How does a thermostatic bath mixer tap work?

A thermostat automatically mixes hot and cold water and maintains it at the temperature you set. It reacts immediately to changes in water pressure , preventing sudden flows of cold or excessively hot water. It also includes a safety lock (usually at 38 °C) to prevent scalding.

How to determine the spacing of a bath mixer tap?

The spacing is the distance between the centres of the hot and cold water connections in the wall. It is measured from the centre of one opening to the centre of the other. The current standard is 150 mm, but during renovations of older apartments you may still encounter a 100 mm spacing.

Can any shower hose and hand shower be connected to a bath mixer tap?

Yes. Bath mixer taps and shower hoses commonly use a standard G 1/2" thread . This allows you to freely combine hand showers and hoses from different brands.

How high should a bath mixer tap be installed above the bathtub?

The standard installation height of a wall-mounted bath mixer tap is 10 to 20 cm above the upper edge of the bathtub (or approximately 70–80 cm from the finished floor). This height helps reduce water splashing when filling the bathtub and ensures that the mixer tap does not interfere during bathing.

Which mixer tap should I choose for a freestanding bathtub?

The most common choice is a freestanding floor-mounted bath mixer tap . Another option (if the bathtub is positioned close to a wall) is a concealed mixer tap with a long wall-mounted spout . You can find inspiration for freestanding bathtubs in our article A freestanding bathtub as the centrepiece of the entire bathroom.

Where is the pull-out shower hose hidden in a bathtub rim mixer tap?

The hand shower hose passes through an opening in the bathtub rim and extends into the space underneath the bathtub. It is usually equipped with a weight or retractable box (Secuflex/Rollbox), which ensures smooth retraction and drains any water droplets into the waste system.

Does a floor-mounted mixer tap need to be planned before laying the floor?

Yes, definitely. A floor-mounted mixer tap requires the installation of a special concealed installation body designed for floor-mounted taps. This must be installed into the rough floor before pouring the screed and laying the tiles. The hot and cold water pipes must also be brought to the exact location in advance.
