Basin taps

(1698)

Basin taps are among the most frequently used elements of every bathroom. A basin tap is exactly what determines how comfortable everyday hand washing, tooth brushing, or your morning hygiene routine will be. Its quality also affects how much time you spend on maintenance, whether it will save water, and how long it will last.

In this category, you will find both classic and modern basin taps, deck-mounted and wall-mounted models – in short, taps for every bathroom basin and smaller WC. But how do you choose the right one?

What should you ask before buying a basin tap?

Before adding your chosen model to the basket, answer a few essential questions:

  • Will the basin tap be installed directly on the basin, or do you want it mounted on the wall?

  • Do you need a tap with a waste set?

  • Is there enough space between the tap and the basin?

  • Do you want water-saving operation?

  • Do you prefer touchless operation?

  • Are you looking for a basin tap for a family bathroom or just for a small WC?

  • Are you choosing a budget-friendly option, or are you looking for a design statement piece?

These details are exactly what determine whether your bathroom basin tap will serve you for years without compromise.

How to choose a basin tap for your bathroom

Every basin tap in the bathroom is part of everyday life. You use it several times a day. That is why it pays not to underestimate your choice. According to our overview, every household can find the right basin tap.

Type of basin tap

  • Classic basin tap – the most common solution for households. You adjust the temperature and water flow manually – using a lever or handles. It is simple, reliable, and affordable.
  • Thermostatic basin tap – maintains a stable water temperature without fluctuations. It is ideal where safety and comfort matter – for example, in households with children or seniors.
  • Tap suitable for a low-pressure water heater – a special solution designed for small electric hot water tanks. If you use a low-pressure water heater, a standard basin tap is not suitable – it could damage the system.

Installation: where should the basin tap go?

Deck-mounted basin tap

This is the most common type. It is installed into a hole in the basin, countertop, or furniture. It can be:

  • single-hole (the most common option),
  • multi-hole (a design solution with separate control elements).

With deck-mounted models, also pay attention to the length of the supply hoses. These connect the tap to the angle valves in the wall. The standard is usually 30–40 cm, but in some bathrooms a longer connection may be needed.

Note: When choosing, pay attention to the spout height of the basin tap. If the spout is too high, water may splash around every time you turn it on. If the spout is too low, you will not be able to wash your hands comfortably underneath it.

Classic wall-mounted basin tap

This type of tap can easily be installed onto the water connections in the wall. However, if you are considering this option, measure the centre distance before heading to the shop for a new one.

The centre distance means the distance between the hot and cold water inlets in the wall. The most common standard is 100 mm or 150 mm, but especially in older homes you may come across a different measurement. The correct centre distance is essential for trouble-free installation of a wall-mounted basin tap.

Concealed basin tap

A modern option where the technical part is hidden inside the wall and only the controls and spout remain visible. Concealed basin taps look stylish and clean. However, installation is more demanding and requires building work. That is why concealed models are most often installed during a full bathroom renovation.

Floor-mounted basin taps

A luxury solution suitable for freestanding basins. If you want your basin and tap to become a striking feature of the bathroom, a floor-mounted basin tap is definitely the right choice.

Controls: which type will suit you best?

The control method significantly affects everyday use.

Single-lever basin tap – the most common option because it offers quick and intuitive one-handed control of both water flow and temperature. It suits every bathroom.

Two-handle basin tap – controls the hot and cold water supply separately. To achieve the ideal water temperature, you need to adjust both handles. It offers a traditional look that fits perfectly into a retro, industrial, or vintage bathroom.

Push-button basin tap – a modern solution that may have the button directly on the tap or separately. Press the button to start the water, and press it again to stop it. Temperature and flow are usually adjusted separately, and the setting remains until you change it.

Touchless basin tap – a highly hygienic solution that used to be used mainly in commercial spaces. However, touchless taps are also an ideal choice for families with children or for seniors. They save water and minimise contact, which reduces the risk of bacteria transfer.

Waste set: with or without?

When choosing a basin tap, one important detail is often overlooked – the waste set. It ensures the closing and draining of water from the basin.

You may come across two options:

  • Basin taps with a waste set – the package also includes a waste set (most often a click-clack or pop-up waste). The advantage is the certainty of compatibility and a unified design. You do not need to worry about whether the waste will match the finish of the tap.
  • Basin taps without a waste set – the tap is sold separately, and you choose the waste separately. This makes sense, for example, if you already have a waste set or need a specific type (e.g. without an overflow or for a basin with an overflow).

Note: When choosing a waste, always check whether the basin has an overflow. Basins with an overflow require a different waste construction than models without one.

SANITINO Tip: If you want everything hassle-free, choose basin taps with a waste set straight away – you will save time and avoid possible installation complications.

Why does the spout matter on a basin tap?

The spout is the part of the tap from which water flows into the basin. In other words – the tap arm that determines where and how the water stream lands.

Depending on the design, it can be:

  • Fixed spout – does not swivel. Suitable for standard bathrooms where you do not need to adjust the direction of the water flow.
  • Swivel spout – can be moved from side to side. It is useful, for example, for wider or double basins, or wherever you need greater flexibility.
  • Without a spout – typical for concealed models, where the spout itself is a separate element in the wall and the controls are separate.

Spout length: a detail that affects comfort

The spout length determines exactly where the water lands. If it is too short, the water flows too close to the back wall of the basin and may splash. A spout that is too long unnecessarily extends into the space and may limit comfort during use.

Ideally, the water stream should be directed approximately into the centre of the bowl.

What is Comfort Zone?

Comfort Zone refers to the distance between the tap spout and the bottom of the basin (or rather the space beneath the spout). The larger the Comfort Zone, the more room you have under the tap.

Taller models with a larger Comfort Zone are especially useful for:

  • washing your hair in the basin,
  • filling taller containers,
  • rinsing your hands without bumping into the body of the tap.

A lower Comfort Zone, on the other hand, is suitable for smaller bathrooms, where you do not want the tap to look too bulky.

Material and build quality

Most high-quality basin taps are made of brass, which is strong and resistant to corrosion. The surface is usually finished with:

  • a chrome layer
  • PVD coating for greater durability
  • matte or coloured finishes

A quality ceramic cartridge is the foundation of a long service life for every basin tap.

Design: matching your bathroom

Today, a basin tap does not have to be only chrome.

Popular options:

Chrome and stainless steel suit every bathroom style. However, our customers also love black basin taps, which we offer in both glossy and matte finishes. Still, every colour has its own appeal. Black fits modern interiors, white suits minimalist bathrooms, while gold and bronze are ideal for vintage or art deco styles.

Features that make sense

Modern basin taps offer more than just water control.

For example:

  • a water-saving flow function,
  • hot water saving,
  • a hidden aerator for a clean design,
  • technologies and surface finishes for easier maintenance,
  • smooth control operation,
  • a bidet shower for even greater comfort in the toilet area.

SANITINO Tip: If you are planning a complete bathroom, we recommend matching your basin taps with the other taps in the room.
